Welcome to our final week of the Knock on Wood Movie Fantasy League dispatch. Every week (more or less), we’ll bring you a recap of the past weekend’s box office, alongside an overview of the new release films and an updated leaderboard, complete with full teams and points!
Both weekends in the domestic box office have been up from previous weeks! Summer mainstays Spider-Man: Brand New Day and The Odyssey have both fallen rapidly below new releases, and have landed at #7 and #8 respectively, more than double their placings last weekend. The biggest surprise is the Avengers: Endgame re-release, complete with ~5 minutes of new footage, which beat out all competition to secure the #1 spot this weekend. If that’s not an indication that Avengers: Doomsday is going to dominate, I don’t know what is.
One of our new releases was a smash hit, and the other was not. Surprisingly, the audience favorite was the hard R-rated video game movie and not the animated family film! Resident Evil tore through all the competition with a $60 million opening weekend, and continued climbing well past the $100 million domestic mark. On the flip side, Forgotten Island landed with a mere $12 million splash, a tough start but not an unexpected one; why would a studio release a hopeful all-ages blockbuster just a few short weeks after school starts?

Also new these past two weeks are a variety of oddities and hopeful awards contenders; these include the John Wilson documentary The History of Concrete, steely comedy The Musical, the animated Shaun the Sheep: The Beast of Mossy Bottom, hard-edged drama/thriller Primetime, Brad Pitt dog adventure Heart of the Beast, sharp action/drama Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother, Sundance favorite Ha-Chan, Shake Your Booty! and English oddball comedy The Incomer.
Resident Evil is the big critical winner, netting 105 bonus points, a strong competitor for Practical Magic 2’s 25. For the most up-to-date scoring on each movie, check out this spreadsheet. Additionally, I’ve made a Letterboxd list of every film chosen by our players for the Fantasy League. You can view that anytime here.

Stay tuned! We will announce our winner very soon!
