The Movie Fantasy League Postmortem: Winner, Reflections, and More!

Alas, just as the seasons pass and the years flow into oblivion, this year’s inaugural Movie Fantasy League has reached its end. After twenty-seven weeks and over seventy films (even more if you count those that were ineligible for the League), we finally have the results. The war was hard-fought, but we may now rest down our battle axes, for it is done.

First of all, a huge congratulations must be issued to Tyler H for securing the top spot! I’m certain he will wear the champion flag with pride, and not belittle those who failed to win in any group chats. His win proves that a heavy-hitter combination of Spider-Man: Brand New Day and The Odyssey (the game’s two top scorers) was the key to victory, alongside sneaky picks like Scary Movie and Backrooms. For your prize, Tyler, you have bragging rights and an imaginary crown that will vanish the second a new winner is crowned. Enjoy the year.

Tyler’s winning picks (and those of his fellow fighters) showcase just how strange of a summer season it has been…sure, the films expected to hit did hit, but they hit hard – both Spider-Man and The Odyssey massively outgrossed expectations, while other hopefuls failed to make a splash. Then there is the horror facet to consider, which significantly overperformed; Obsession is the obvious spotlight, but Backrooms, Insidious: Out of the Further, and Resident Evil also did very well. Then there were the narratives: the history and buzz behind films like Coyote vs. Acme, The Drama, and The Invite spurred them on to success. The fact that this is only a portion of the year in moviegoing is proof that it’s one of the best of the decade.

This has also been quite a process for me. This is not only my first time facilitating a game like this, but the support has been overwhelming, and I appreciate it very much. To those who read my (mostly) weekly dispatches: thank you. To those who didn’t: I hope you will consider reading them next year!

Before we wrap up, I crunched some numbers and want to share what I believe to be the ideal Fantasy League line-up, given the parameters (eight films, with a fake $100 to spend), which would give the optimal return on investment.

  • The Odyssey – cost $45, gained 1105 points
  • Spider-Man: Brand New Day – cost $30, gained 1449 points
  • The Sheep Detectives – cost $5, gained 215 points
  • Coyote vs. Acme – cost $5, gained 214 points
  • The End of Oak Street – cost $5, gained 139 points
  • Obsession – cost $3, gained 593 points
  • Backrooms – cost $3, gained 417 points
  • The Invite – cost $3, gained 206 points

…for a total point value of 4338 points, almost a full thousand above Tyler’s total. Obviously, it’s impossible to know at the outset how much a film might be worth (hence the fact that Obsession only cost $3 to draft), but it’s fun to reflect and see afterwards just how perfect a team could have been constructed with the gift of foresight.

Thank you all for joining me for this year’s Movie Fantasy League. Stay tuned for updates on next year’s League! If you like what we do here and have enjoyed the League, please consider buying me a popcorn! It helps keep this site ad-free, in addition to keeping the Movie Fantasy League at no cost to the player. Every little bit helps!
